What is Scott’s main concern at the very end? - Message to the public

Scott wants to make sure that they will not be forgotten. You may also consider his reliability when he claims that he hasn’t regretted the journey. They freeze themselves to death and it couldn’t have been pleasant. But to appear as the brave men who fought their way the southernmost place on earth.  He says:” But we have been willing to give our lives to this enterprise, which is for the honor of our country”. Again - He is extremely patriotic and it is obvious that they want to be remembered as respected Englishmen.
What is Scott’s main concern at the very end?

He is very concerned of that he would not be able to
write any more because of the freezing cold climate.
They are running out of food and fuel too.
His last entry says: For God's sake look after our people.

Scott about the English character - Message to the public

"Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman"

Scott had fought for his country and not himself. The expedition was for England, and in his opinion the company had done the expedition for England and it woul be appreciated by the British citizens, because they are so patriotic. He praises the British.

How does Scott account for the failure of the expedition?

Scott defiantly finds it difficult realize that they have lost the race to the South Pole. Instead he blames misfortune in all risks which had been undertaken. Next he gives three reasons to the trips failure. First their expedition was delayed because of the loss of a pony. Next the snow and weather held them up for long. But still it’s important for him to tell that the failure didn’t occur because of a faulty organization.

The diary compared with the letter - Message to the Public

The letter "Message to the public" is more a gathering of the hole expedition. Scott write it when he has given up. He know he could not stand up to the death anymore, and then he makes his conclusion of what they have been exposed for and going through. In the diary he still gets some hope and it is the biggest difference from the letter and the diary.

The moral

The bad weather condition combined with Scotts growing depression doesn’t show the glowing moral that is needed. The trip was no success. Pain doesn’t feel as horrible when winning as loosing. And they have lost the race to the South Pole to Norwegians. It doesn’t seem as if the purpose of the trip is to gain fame. The trip is more to honor England. This can be spotted by the race against the Norwegians.  It is not really the person themselves they fight against, but Norway in itself.

Individual work - Thilde

The main character could maybe be Titus Oates. The narrator could be an I-teller. Then you could tell about his feelings and thoughts. I have to remember writing it in an old way if it should take place in 1911 as the story/diary did.
I could also choose Scott and then I could tell about how he sees the company, and their way to handle the situation. The narrator could an all-knowing teller. Maybe a little bit like the story “Message to the public”. But with the all-knowing teller who can see the situation from another point of view. The plot has to be real.

Oates death - The last enteries

Titus Oates say to the other men that they should leave him in his sleeping-bag. But they men would not, and they took him with them on a afternoon march. When it became night they could see, that it was over for him.

Titus Oates' last thoughts were of his mother. Scoot see Oates as a very brave and gentle man.

"I take this opportunity of saying that we have stuck to our sick companions to the last". It was important for Scott that other know that is was Oates own choice, and that Scoot and the rest of the company were there to the last.

The men's situation - The last enteries

It's obvious that the physical surroundings doesn't make the trip back home easier. In page 62, line 5 Scott tells about freezing temperatures down to 35 degrees. "No human being could face it, and we are worn out nearly". This statement says much too, about their mental and physical conditions. Crises emerge clearly. In his next statement he claims: "My right foot has gone nearly all the toes - two days ago I was proud possessor of best feet." Pain simply feels lesser when winning. It was such a big disappointment for the men so it is evidently that their mental situation changes.

4) Make a list of the men who accompany Scott on his expedition and keep track of their fates.

Scotts writing style - The last entries

Scott tells a lot about the weather situation.
It is short sentences and he did not finish them all. Examples could be "We may hope for 3 this afternoon, 7x6=42". Scott misses some verbs for instance  "The sky completely overscast when we started this morning."

Genre - The last entries

The last Entries is a diary.
It is told from the main character's point of view.
